I joined Shorts in January 2020 as a senior in both our audit and accounts teams, before later being promoted to manager.

I started my career as an accountant after finishing my A levels, joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in Sheffield as an audit trainee. I have since worked for independent practice in Barnsley and most recently, Grant Thornton in Sheffield, where I qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant at the age of 21.

I have gained valuable experience working with a variety of businesses, from local owner-managed businesses to large, multi-national groups and household names.

My current role at Shorts involves managing the provision of audit services and financial reporting for a varied client base, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish, keeping clients informed at each stage. I also maintain contact throughout the year with our clients – acting as a sounding board on day-to-day challenges when required.

My personal journey at Shorts

I joined Shorts with the aim of progressing my career. Following my interview and on the run-up to joining, I felt the firm and the partners had my interests and ambitions at heart, and I wasn’t simply being sold “the dream”.

I quickly settled in and felt at home – the team dynamic makes this easy and the no-overtime culture was a surprising welcome for me and other colleagues who have joined from larger firms.

There is no “us and them” approach – the Partners are part of the team that aids development at all levels, changes perspectives and echoes the positive and friendly culture. I’ve been encouraged to share my ideas and contribute my thoughts from the outset.

In my recent progression to a manager, I wasn’t thrown in at the deep end like I have seen many others face during my career. I was given a smaller initial portfolio, to help me get up to speed and had weekly catch-ups with one of the partners to discuss my progress. I also had access to other key members of staff, such as our practice director, with whom I had regular coaching sessions to develop soft skills, reflect on situations/experiences and develop goals. I feel a much more rounded individual since joining Shorts, and trust that my development will continue.
