I joined Shorts as a management accountant, following 8 years in small accountancy practices where I gained experience in a variety of different areas from payroll to year-end accounts and tax.

Given my extensive experience with cloud-based accounting software, my role quickly expanded into training and implementing Xero and add-on software for our clients. I am naturally inquisitive – always looking for efficiencies and new ways to do things so now I apply this to client’s processes – which is something I really love as it allows me to find ways to save client’s time and make processes more streamlined and efficient.

I am also a Client FD and as part of this role I work with clients closely so they understand where they are now as a business, but also look longer term- where so they want to be and how they get there.

My personal journey at Shorts

I was initially apprehensive when I first joined Shorts, having worked at small accountancy firms for 8 years. I was concerned I would be treated as a number rather than an individual. – I needn’t have worried.

While joining Shorts I have met some fantastic people, that are supportive and inspiring. There are people from all different backgrounds and that’s a really great team to be part of, being able to learn from the experiences of others.

One of the great advantages of Shorts is its commitment to developing and progressing the existing team. Since joining Shorts, I have progressed from Accounts Senior to Manager, then Client Finance Director, and most recently in January 2024 was promoted to Genus Director.

Part of this development is a result of the varied training opportunities available. For example, I am currently doing a training course on data analytics.

The flexible working at Shorts is another big advantage – particularly as I have three children. It allows me to rearrange my day when the unexpected happens without the stress and pressure of needing to be in the office. I can now do some of the school pickups as well so my work/life balance has really improved as I have never been in the position to do this previously. I really enjoy working at Shorts and look forward to seeing the progression over the coming years.
